The MadJester R1

10 years old – and not even a hint of wee on its pants

The MadJester R1 sailed through it’s 10th M.O.T meaning it hasn’t missed a beat in it’s 46,000 miles of 20-valve frivolity…except for one foolish trip to Birmingham where horrid bubbling throttle response confirmed it was a victim of carb icing, and on the slippy road in question, gave me a bit of bottie marzipan. We turned back and we didn’t fall out about it…that’s love for you. Nothing to do with bakery at all.

Apart from that solitary incident it has never faltered, preferring instead to be a long standing reminder of speedy fun’s advantages over big sluggish selfish things herding themselves in packs known as ‘motorists’. Some of the latter are a dangerous breed and should be treated with caution, middle fingers, Domestos or any other Greek Gods which are up to the task.

How we love it:

  • Paint:
2007: Saucy paintwork to replace the original 2001 reb/black/white colours
  • Tyres:
Currently sporting Metzeler RaceTec’s at 34 and 40 psi – exquisite in the dry, like bars of soap in the wet.
  • Brakes:
Goodridge braided hoses (not “Ho’s”), otherwise standard. Best thing I ever did to prevent brakes getting spongy.
